Pintho Khop & Gunongan
Pintho Khop,
also called Pintu Aceh, is the palace gate to the compound of
the Gunongan complex. The Pintu Khop and Gunongan are set in the
Taman Sari, a pleasure garden near the Krueng Daroy river, landscaped
for the enjoyment of the Queen. This complex was reputedly built
by Sultan Iskandar Muda in the early 1700s for his wife,
a princess from the Malay Peninsula , to remind her of the mountainous
landscape of her homeland. Gunongan is a man-made miniature mountain
made of stone and plaster. A symbol of Aceh, the image of this
lovely monument was used to decorate jewelry and coins. The architecture
has influences from Hinduism even though it was built during the
Muslim kingdom of Aceh Darussalam. There is a gate that leads
up to the top.
Kandang Gunongan
Kandang Gunongan
is the grave of Sultan Iskandar Thani, built by his wife, the
daughter of Iskandar Muda, Sri Ratu Safiatuddin. Iskandar Thani
was favored by Sultan Iskandar Muda and was given his daughter
as wife and also inherited the sultanate. It is centrally located,
not far from Kerkhof.
