Following the tsunami,
funds were collected for Aceh by Seikatsu, an organisation of ordinary Japanese
housewives dedicated to environment, health, fair trade, empowerment of women
and improvement of workers' conditions. In 1989, these 'everyday heroines'
received the Right Livelihood Award (often called the 'Alternative Nobel
Prize') 'for creating the most successful, sustainable model of production
and consumption in the industrialised world.'
Seikatsu is supporting
the Aceh Heritage Documentation Project upon the recommendation of Dato'
Anwar Fazal
(http://www.anwarfazal.net), recipient
of the Right Livelihood Award 1982.

Nara Machizukuri Centre
is an organisation of ordinary citizens with a vision of conserving and improving
the historic city of Nara, Japan, through community development. The NMC
was one of the founding organisations behind the Asia & West Pacific
Network for Urban Conservation, the predecessor of Lestari Heritage Network
in 1991. As part of their international work, they have supported the Penang
Heritage Trust in the past, and today they are supporting the work of the
Urban Development Institute Foundation in Chiangmai. The NMC responded to
our request for assistance by publishing an appeal and organising a
community-level fund-raising event in April 2005.
