In response to the disaster, we
are embarking on a project to inventorize the heritage of Aceh, prioritizing
the tsunami-hit areas. We feel that this documentation project is urgent
for the following reasons:
-
To record the heritage damaged
or destroyed by tsunami
-
To raise support for the damaged
and endangered heritage
-
To identify and safeguard
the surviving heritage, so that more heritage will not be lost during the
imminent re-building process
-
To build up a database on
Acehnese heritage, especially since the key archival and cultural institutions,
the Pusat Dokumentasi Aceh (Aceh Documentation Center) and The Lembaga Kebudayan
Aceh (LAKA) or Aceh Cultural Foundation, were destroyed during the tsunami.
Project Work and Outputs
For this purpose, we are focusing
on the built heritage of Aceh, but are keeping our eyes open to including
other forms of cultural heritage. This project will consist of the following:
-
On-site Inventory of 'before'
and 'after' tsunami; if photographs of what existed 'before' cannot be found,
then sketches will be made
-
Research of old photographs
and historical information
-
Setting up a database - current,
recent and old photographs, sketches, measured drawings, maps, plans,
descriptions and historical information
We are aiming for the following
outputs:
-
Putting up a website
-
Publishing a CD
-
Producing an inventory book
- Making a short documentary
film
At this critical time,
there is a poverty of public records on the heritage of Aceh, although
there might be a wealth of records in the Netherlands and other
international collections. We appeal to individuals and institutions
abroad to share their photographs and information on this website
initially, and eventually to help rebuild Aceh's historical resource
centres. |
