In many settlements of coastal Aceh
destroyed by the tsunami, the mosque was usually the only building that survived.
This was the case with the old mosque of Ulee Lheue.
The mosque was however
seriously damaged; a dislocated column was fixed during the post-tsunami
rehabilitation phase. The grandness of the historic mosque reflects
the former importance and prosperity of Ulee Lheue, the historic
port of Aceh.
