As
a new World Heritage Site, the city of George Town faces many
challenges. 'The Economics of Revitalization' is the theme of
a conference designed to learn from international speakers and
to engage local stakeholders, in order to formulate the correct
approaches and broaden the movement to revitalize the George
Town World Heritage Site.
Panels
are organised according to the following themes:
-
Optimising
returns from cultural tourism
-
Value
adding to property & business in the World Heritage Site
& its surroundings
-
Developing
a win-win-win relationship with community organisations
-
Effective
enabling & enforcement: The role of government
The
event is organised as part of the first anniversary celebration
of the Straits of Melaka World Heritage Listing.

World
Heritage Listing for George Town
On
7 July 2008 Melaka and George Town were declared UNESCO World
Heritage Sites. The World Heritage inscription validates the
"Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca" as places
with unique cultural assets, representing three Outstanding
Universal Values (OUVs):
- exceptional
examples of multicultural trading towns permeated with layers
of history
- living
testimony to the cultural and religious diversity reflected
in our multicultural living heritage, and
-
intact townscapes of vernacular architecture, particularly
of shophouses and townhouses.
