JewTown
Antique shops have taken
over the old spice godowns in JewTown. Here can be found everything from
an entire Kerala timber house (taken down and reassembled in the vast interior
space of the godown) to countless remnants of former times.
The Pardesi Synagogue
in JewTown was built in 1568 and is immediately adjacent to the Mattancherry
Palace. The Synagogue has captured the imagination of many, including Salman
Rushdie in The Moor's Last Sigh. The Synagogue's remarkable clock tower from
1760 was stabilized and restored in 2003 with a grant from the World Monuments
Fund.
