Events Update 2007
Aceh Heritage Community Foundation collaborates with Nara Machizukuri Centre and Asian Research Institute, National University of Singapore

AHCF and ARI-NUS Joint Field Work in Cultural Heritage Rehabilitation of Aceh, Feb-Mar 2007

The fieldwork was carried out b Aceh Heritage Community Foundation collaborated with the Asia Research Institute of National University of Singapore (ARI-NUS) from 15 February to 3 March 2007 in /Banda Aceh/ and /Aceh Besar/.

Dr Patrick Daly of ARI-NUS mentored the survey team. The team consisted of one Senior Researcher (Yenny Rahmayati), two Research Coordinators (Hilda Mufiaty and Zulhan Hanif), and five Research Assistants (Heppy Herawaty, Haryati, Qurratul Aini, Heri Azuwar, M. Ihsan). The survey was also monitored by Dr. Joice S. Pang, Assistant Professor of Psychology, School of Humanities and Social
Sciences, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore. Dr. Pang observed the process of the survey and gave the inputs especially from physiological aspects such as how to approach the respondents, develop effective questions that would be appropriate to the respondent?s' background, and so on.

The survey was part of our Community Outreach Project on Heritage Awareness and our Inventory Project on Intangible Heritage. This joint fieldwork is an attempt to assess how far the community recognizes their heritage in the post-disaster situation. We also tried to analyse the recovery process of Aceh in terms of both natural and cultural heritage (tangible and intangible), and the extent to which the
reconstruction process recognizes those heritage values and resources that are significant for community building.

The planned outputs of this fieldwork will be articles, a policy paper and publications. It is hoped that the results of this fieldwork can be used as a lesson for capacity building in other disaster areas around the world.

Around 200 respondents in 16 different locations have been interviewed. The locations were divided into 3 categories. The first covers the Tsunami-affected Areas, the second covers the areas not affected by Tsunami, and the third covers the relocation areas provided by the government to the survivors who did not want to return to their villages in Tsunami disaster areas. The type of respondent varied, ranging from young people to old people, key persons such as head of the village,
religious leaders, etc, both women and man, educated and uneducated people, and so on. A survey team was established for this field work, consisting of around 8-12 interviewers. Besides the in-depth interview that was recorded by the voice recorder, we also did note-taking and took photographs. An activity report of this project has been developed.
